I try--gently--to give the children I teach an alternate POV if I hear some bit of gender-assumption spoken as if it were truth. I also watch out for the kids who might be finding their way to an alternate lifestyle, like the two gay boys in sixth grade, though I am happy to say the other kids seem to be accepting it with a shrug, and when they hold hands right out in public, the teasing isn't vicious, it's the same teasing a het couple would get. Aftre all, this is junior high.
But I do think that quiet ripples in the water propagating out and intersecting is the way to make change without the thunderstrike of a rock into the pool, violently agitating the waters. Though, always, there is a place for the revolutionary front runners. But my nature is not to be one.
