You know, computers are just great...when they work.
However, when you accidentally block a program that shouldn't be blocked (re: Windows File Sharing), and inadvertently create a rule in your Internet security program that prevents your computer from connecting at all, you've got a bit of a problem.
After all, the poor beastie was just doing what you told it to do.
Down, boy! Nasty obedient computer!!
As it happened, I was able to track the source of this snafu down. My Symantec Alert logs keep a record of that sort of thing, and once I had figured out what I had done ("Block Windows File Sharing," which also cut off all outbound communications), I was able to remove this idiotic self-generated "rule" and get my machine back to normal.
However, panic-inducing moments such as these do show the extent a person has become dependent on the Internet. Especially when, as in my case, I don't watch much TV. I haven't watched the nightly news in years. The Web and the morning paper (now there's a conundrum) are my main sources of information.
Just a friendly reminder: don't EVER hit anything that says, "Block Windows 32 Services."
